Our 2010 Scholarship Winners have been selected

Oregonians Credit Union was pleased to offer a scholarship program this year. All OFCU members who are entering or attending college could apply for one of five $750 scholarships. Applicants of the 2010 Oregonians Credit Union Scholarship program were asked to write an essay on one of two topics:

• What have you learned about saving and finances in high school that you can apply to your future as a college student?

• Explain a time you found yourself in a financial crunch and discuss how you were able to overcome the situation.

Due to the large quantity of well written and creative essays we received, the scholarship panel had an extremely difficult time narrowing down the essays to our five finalists. We are proud to be presenting our scholarships to these deserving students:

Garson Pliska

Shane' Gill

University of Oregon

George Fox University

Erik Jensen

Keith Baldwin

Portland State University

Portland Community College

Congratulations to our winners!

Thanks go out to all of our members that applied. We encourage you to apply for future scholarship offers through OFCU.

Overdraft Rules for Debit Cards are Changing July 1st

Due to recent regulatory changes affecting how checking account overdrafts are managed, there will be changes in what types of transactions can be allowed to overdraft your account.

An overdraft occurs when there is not enough money in an account to cover a transaction, but Oregonians Credit Union allows the transaction to be paid. As of July 1, 2010 we will no longer pay overdrafts resulting from ATM or debit card transactions1. If OFCU does not pay an overdraft, the transaction will be declined at an ATM or at the checkout at a merchant.

We may authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions:

  • Checks and other transactions made using your checking account number
  • Automatic bill payments

According to our standard overdraft practices OFCU will charge a $20 fee for each overdraft with a maximum of $40 per day. You do receive 3 free overdraft transfers per month if you have sufficient funds in your savings account to cover the transaction2.  Understand that frequent or continued overdrafts regardless of reason may result in account closure3.

We suggest that you protect your checking account with an Overdraft Line of Credit. An Overdraft Line of Credit is attached to your checking account. When funds are not available in your checking account to cover any type of transaction, the Overdraft LOC will automatically advance funds to your checking account to cover the amount overdrawn. The interest you pay on the Overdraft Line of Credit is significantly less than overdraft fees. Click here to learn more about Overdraft Lines of Credit.

If you have any questions about your overdraft options please call us at 503.239.5336 or 800.982.2974.

1Some merchants are able to ‘force’ transactions to clear thus overdrawing accounts.  They are able to do this for some low dollar transactions (Starbucks, Taco Bell and other fast food chains).  Some merchants have what is called ‘floor limits’ where they have been granted automatic approvals up to $100 by the Visa network, regardless of account balance. 2Saving on a regular basis is a great way to avoid checking account problems due to overdraft issues. Few institutions offer as many free automatic transfers as OFCU, if any at all. 3The common reasons for overdrawing accounts are failure to track each deposit and withdrawal, thus knowing the account balance at all times OR relying on the account balance shown at ATMs and other machines.  These balances are not always up to the minute because you can make purchases and withdrawals that are pending and take time to clear your account.
